Zach's Sneaky Peek

Sometimes I am amazed with the things that life throws us. However, it is the human ability to ‘cope’ that never ceases to amaze me.

I recently had the huge pleasure of photographing Zach and his parents, Vikki and Gary, at Hestercombe Gardens.

Zach is one of the happiest and most gorgeous little boys I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. But, behind this lovely smile hides his condition, Hypo Plastic Left Heart Syndrome (a rare congenital heart defect in which the left ventricle of the heart is severely underdeveloped), which has thrown all sorts at his parents, who at one point thought he’d never leave hospital. Aside of Zach’s cardiac issue, he also has a respiratory problem, called Bronchomalacia (which hopefully he will grow out of) which means that he has had tracheostomy and needs to be permanently on a ventilator. You can read more about their personal family struggle on Gary’s blog.

But the family I met was like any other. His parents beamed with pride and joy at their perfect son and Zach was like any other little boy who was experiencing the world and learning about his surroundings.

I was thrilled to be able to capture some very special images for Vikki and Gary to share with the world. Their life is one that many parents could never begin to understand, yet away from the numerous hospital trips, tests and daily medical intervention, they are a ‘typical’ family unit who share the daily highs and lows of life along with their dog Lemmy.

One of the things I love most about my job is the relationship which I am able to build with those I’m photographing – something which is made possible by charging a session fee which allows me to spend as much time as is necessary to get the ‘perfect’ images. Every portrait session has a different tale and I think the key to taking gorgeous images is being able to get those in front of the lens to open up and show their intimate self. But, on this occasion it was more than this. I felt humbled and proud of the human race.

I feel very lucky to have witnessed such a strong family unit, with parents who are taking every moment and really ‘living’ them.

So, I hope that Gary and Vikki enjoy the photographs of their beautiful boy, Zach, but most of all I am grateful to them for showing me that sometimes, when nothing is going to plan, the way to deal with things is with strength, love and little bit of laughing!
