I can’t remember quite how I heard of her. Maybe it was a friend or fellow photographer who told me about her? Maybe someone directed me to a photographer who she was friends with? Or maybe it was one of those fate things that I just stumbled upon her? However it happened, it happened over 3 years ago now.
At first I did what I always do when I stumble across another photographers web-site. I head to the gallery, quickly flick through their ‘best images’ (isn’t that what everyone puts up there?!) and then I head over to the blog where you get a much better feel for that photographers style and who they are as a person.
I read. And I read. And I read. And I thought ‘Wow, I love this lady’. Not only are her images amazing and awe-inspiring, but I find the person that she is and the honesty that she has so inspiring too. And from that moment on, I became hooked.
Every morning, every night (& often several times a day in between) I would check her blog in the chance that there was another quirky, heart-felt instalment of her life & more amazing images to drool over. It became a standing joke in our house. I quoted her left, right & centre, moved my ‘blog-stalking’ to breakfast time to get my ‘fix’ earlier & even bought equipment ‘because she’s got it’!
A couple of years down the line, she announced she was teaching ‘Workshops’. But there was only one downfall. This little lady is based in California.
“The minute she announces a course, I’m coming over to stay’ I told my friend in LA. “You sure that’s sensible?!” He questioned me. “Sensible?!. Who cares about sensible?!” I told him. But try as I might, I just couldn’t get on a course. The time difference between here and the USA, meant that as soon as she advertised them, within half & hour, all 20 places, were booked up. Then it happened. Fate that is.
I was in the shower, getting ready for a pre-wedding shoot and randomly thinking about my conversation with my LA friend the night before, where he’d asked me yet again, if I managed to get on the latest course. I was pondering over the thoughts that ‘If she ever held a Workshop in the UK would that be good of bad?!’. You see, I’d kind of ‘bought into’ the whole idea of jetting off to LA, doing the course and then swanning around in LA ‘darling’ with my friend, who’s also a photographer.
‘Ah well. It will never happen’. I consoled myself. I’ll just have to keep trying for ‘the American Dream’. Just then I realised, I hadn’t looked at her blog for a few days. I knew I would be late for my pre-wedding shoot if I did, but something inside of me told me I HAD to. I had to get my little fix of ‘inspiration’ before I headed off.
OMG! OMG! OMG! The first entry. ‘London J* Workshop’. Arrrrrggghhhhh. Panic. Run around the house. Think. Get the credit card. Phone Mum (why do I always call her?!). Phone my friend in LA. He’s in bed. Panic. Pace up & down. Squeal with excitement. Panic more. Call my husband & make him promise we can re-mortgage the house if I get on the course. He agrees. Phew….call Caroline & Owen & tell them there is an emergency & I’m going to be late!
I thought it was a first come, first served idea but, apparently, the deal with the Workshops, so I’ve since been told, is that 10’s of people apply & then she hand-picks you. Do I actually think that’s the case. No. Do I want to think that’s the case. Of course!
Anyway, to cut a very long story short. I got picked. And tomorrow, along with 20 other lucky photographers, I will be heading up to London for a pre-workshop dinner and a full days intensive training with THE lady herself. Fate. I love you!
Her name. Jasmine Star. For those of you who aren’t photographers that will probably mean nothing to you. And for those of you who are…..you might be kind of jealous. Don’t worry…..feel free to pick my brains when I get back!
Happy (very happy!) Monday.
P.S. You may be wondering why on earth I’m blogging at this time of night….I can’t even contemplate sleep for the excitement!! And, if I do manage to sleep, I keep having recurring dreams about falling over in front of her or fainting!!
P.P.S The below is proof that she is actually in this country….look how wet the pavement is behind her!
