Spotlight: Women in Business | Anna Morris

Apr 19 2018 Leave a Comment

In the fifth of our Spotlight series on marvellous Women we talk to Artist and Teacher Anna Morris.

We recently went to the little village of Isle Abbotts just outside Taunton and photographed Anna in her studio and home, a place of sanctuary and creativity. Photographing real Women is fast becoming a steadfast passion of mine and what better time than now as we launch our Women’s Portraiture Collections to the world!

About Anna

Tell us who you are and a little about what you do…

My name is Anna Morris and I’m a painter and teacher living in Somerset. Moving from Oxford to Somerset almost 18 months ago has had a marked effect on my life and my work as an artist.  The proximity of the coast and the quality of light here along with the big skies, combined with the discovery of a small workshop/studio with electricity down the bottom of the garden – a room of my own – have created the perfect conditions for a very productive year.

Tell us a little about your most recent shoot with Venetia and what personal branding means to your business.

I confess I was nervous about my shoot with Venetia as I’m not a natural in front of the camera but she put me very much at ease and was almost invisible by the end (in the best way possible of course!)  Having a photo shoot is not something I would have thought of doing as an artist but there was something very gratifying about having my activity and the small, usually overlooked details of my environment recorded at this point in time.  I think the professional imagery is something I’ll value in years to come as a record of my work as an artist and of what feels like a particularly significant point in my career.

What is your greatest achievement as a woman? (Can be in your business, your personal life, something massive, something silly, something you feel proud of)

The things I am most proud of? Being a single parent and managing to bring up a daughter whose company I love, who makes me laugh and whose qualities I admire! Also pursuing my creative vision over the last 30 years, sometimes frustrating but ultimately deeply satisfying and something I will always be obsessed with!

Name a woman that you admire and tell us why (can be anyone at any level)

There are so many women I admire, Cathy Newman of Channel 4 news who takes no prisoners, Lauren Laverne of 6 Music for her down to earth warmth and kickass attitude and the MP Caroline Lucas who over so many years has talked sense and truth to power.  There are many artists and musicians too as well as amazing friends who manage to balance the many demands of work and family and still find time to catch up and put the world to rights.

This years theme for IWD is #pressforprogress – Are you happy to share a point in your life where you feel you have had to stand up for gender parity / work hard against / press for progress etc.

My role as an art teacher is a privileged one in that I can encourage young people to think about all kinds of issues and open their eyes to different ways of looking at the world which often includes questions of equality and fairness so I hope in some way that I’m making a difference as well as being a good role model for the students I teach.

And finally, If you were organising a parade in celebration of IWD, which Woman or Women would you create a statue of for pride of place on the float?

As an artist, I feel I should choose an artist so I’m going to say Frida Kahlo who was fearless and ahead of her time in so many ways – looking forward to the exhibition at the V&A this summer!

You can see more of her work at www.annamorris.info and keep up to date on Instagram !

At First Blush

This week we have had the pleasure of our imagery being featured as the cover story for April’s issue of WED Magazine !

WED knew this was perfectly placed for their Spring edition and we couldn’t agree more! Such fun was had producing this shoot and pulling together some of my absolute favourite suppliers (see list below).

Although I LOVE to photograph real weddings, for the beautiful unknown moments and capturing true spontaneity, there is something really special about planning a shoot right from mood-board creation through to finalising edited images. Being able to work with a super talented bunch, providing professional photography for everyone and expanding our portfolio is credit enough but being recognised and featured by the wonderful team at WED truly pops the decorative icing on the wedding cake!

We look forward to sharing the full gallery with you in a few weeks time, for now see below the spread featured in this month’s WED Magazine, on shelves now so go get your copy for oodles of invaluable tips and more stunning inspiration.

Much love,

Venetia

Spotlight: Women in Business | Stephanie Eastwood

Venetia Norrington Personal Branding

A few weeks ago we wrote a little blog entry on marvellous Women to coincide with International Women’s Day. We’ve felt inspired to show off some amazing Women in our lives that we have been lucky enough to hang out with and photograph, Women in business who strive to achieve their passions, and what better time than now as we launch our Women’s Portraiture Collections to the world!

In the fourth of our Spotlight series we ask florist Stephanie Eastwood who owns Verbena Styling our questions of the moment…

About Steph

Tell us who you are, the name of your business and a little about what you do…

My name is Stephanie Eastwood and I am the owner of Verbena Floral Styling, I provide flowers for both weddings and events with all of my designs being inspired by the Somerset countryside where my studio is based. I love nothing more than going to the flower market and choosing flowers and creating individual and romantic designs for each of my couples. My designs are always full of scented flowers and seasonal blooms alongside gorgeous foliage’s to give that natural garden feel.

Venetia Norrington Personal Branding

What inspired you to start your business, and what drives you as a woman in business today?

Becoming a florist was always a childhood dream and after following a more academic route after I finished school I followed my dreams and retrained as a florist. I feel so lucky to have a career doing something I love and this is what drives me and my business. Its hard work and long hours but knowing I can get up in the morning and not dread going to work makes it all worth it.

Venetia Norrington Personal Branding

Tell us a little about your most recent shoot with Venetia and what personal branding means to your business.

My shoot with Venetia was incredible. I have recently rebranded my business and I am in the process of having a new website designed. I knew I needed a set of beautiful photos to showcase my work but also photos of myself. I needed professional imagery showing the person behind the business and convey through these images how I work and where I gain my inspiration. As soon as I spoke to Venetia I knew she was the photographer I needed. She immediately put me at ease and I feel we had an instant connection. The shoot was a huge amount of fun, so relaxed and the photos are just incredible!

Venetia Norrington Personal Branding

What is your greatest achievement as a woman? (Can be in your business, your personal life, something massive, something silly, something you feel proud of)

My greatest achievement as a Woman is having my own business and doing a job I love. It’s an amazing feeling to deliver wedding flowers and to see the look on the couples face when they see the flowers, the realisation that I created this and had the honour of playing a part in such an important day in someone’s life is a a privilege and to say that is my business is a massive achievement.

Name a woman that you admire and tell us why (can be anyone at any level)

I don’t think I could name just one Woman, I admire so many Women for so many different reason but I particularly admire anyone who has the courage to follow their dreams. It’s very easy to just keep going as things are and spend your life saying I’d love to do that, I wish I could do that. I admire anyone who has the courage to follow that dream however big or small it may be.

This years theme for IWD is #pressforprogress – Are you happy to share a point in your life where you feel you have had to stand up for gender parity / work hard against / press for progress etc.

Men and Women are very different, we have different ways of doing things and different ways of thinking. As Women we need to press for change so that these differences are embraced, both in the workplace and life in general.

And finally, If you were organising a parade in celebration of IWD, which Woman or Women would you create a statue of for pride of place on the float?

There are so many Women who I would have on my float but as a Woman with my own business I think I would have to fill it with Women Business owners. You are all incredible inspirational Women and together we would have the most incredible float and have so much fun in the process!

Spotlight: Women in Business | Annie Legge

Venetia Norrington Personal Branding

We are continuing our Spotlight Series on marvellous Women to coincide with the campaign kick off for International Women’s Day. We’ve felt inspired to show off some amazing Women in our lives that we have been lucky enough to hang out with and photograph, Women in business who strive to achieve their passions, and what better time than now as we launch our Women’s Portraiture Collections to the world!

In the third of our Spotlight series we ask Annie Legge from The Dot Project some questions…

About Annie

Tell us who you are, the name of your business and a little about what you do…

Annie Legge, Co-Founder and Director of The Dot Project which aims to achieve sustainable social impact through the connection of people and technology.  We empower organisations to embrace technology as an enabler for greater impact.

What inspired you to start your business, and what drives you as a woman in business today?

A love of technology and a desire to have impact on the world. As a women-led cooperative, we are proud to be championing the diversity agenda and passionate about the role of women in technology, particularly the natural instinct of collaboration, connection and empathy. I am infinitely curious and I know the impact I need to make is still waiting for me!

Tell us a little about your most recent shoot with Venetia and what personal branding means to your business.

My partner-in-crime Cat & I had a very relaxed shoot with Venetia, in the outdoors in central Bristol – we are both naturally shy of the camera, and yet knew a cropped holiday shot from Facebook was not going to portray the professional imagery we needed for our business. We wanted photos that could represent us both professionally, but at the same time show our natural selves and the dynamic and fun work life we have together.

What is your greatest achievement as a Woman? (Can be in your business, your personal life, something massive, something silly, something you feel proud of)

The obvious is being a mother, but I guess the age and stage I have got to know I feel most proud of having continually stretched in my comfort zone – a friend of mine insists I don’t have one at all! The personal growth and learning that comes from living on the edge, taking a gamble, doing something different is incredibly energising – and of course often exhausting. I am forever learning ways in which to try and manage myself!

Name a Woman that you admire and tell us why (can be anyone at any level)

June Scobee Rodgers – the widow of Challenger Space Shuttle Commander Dick Scobee. I know June personally, and she had an early influence on my own personal journey.  Despite such tragedy, June dedicated her energy to continue the educational mission of the crew through creating the Challenger Centers to drive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education.  June is everything I aspire to be, the most loving, kind, generous lady, but with purpose and mission.

This years theme for IWD is #pressforprogress – Are you happy to share a point in your life where you feel you have had to stand up for gender parity / work hard against / press for progress etc.

A career in the tech sector means sadly there has been a few! I always felt my empathy and relationship skills were not valued.  The Dot Project will demonstrate the true skills of women in STEM, the importance of a human to human approach to drive success.

And finally, If you were organising a parade in celebration of IWD, which Woman or Women would you create a statue of for pride of place on the float?

Any woman who has put themselves out there, who hasn’t been afraid to champion their cause!

Thank you Annie (and Cat)!

Spotlight: Women in Business | Gemma Fowler

Venetia Norrington Personal Branding

Continuing our spotlight series on marvellous Women to coincide with International Women’s Day. We have felt inspired to show off some amazing Women in our lives that we have been lucky enough to hang out with and photograph, Women in business who strive to achieve their passions, and what better time than now as we launch our Women’s Portraiture Collections to the world!

In the second of our Spotlight series we ask florist Gemma Fowler who owns Poppy’s of Exeter our girl power questions…

About Gem

Tell us who you are, the name of your business and a little about what you do…

My name is Gemma and I own a lovely little wedding flower studio in Devon, on Powderham Estate. I moved away from the retail side of floristry over a year ago now to concentrate on my ever growing wedding flower business. I primarily spend my time having some amazing chats with wonderful couples gathering ideas for their big day and just generally getting absorbed in their plans and aspirations for their wedding.

I also teach at my little studio barn, welcoming groups to my workshops and passing on my knowledge learnt over the years.

What inspired you to start your business, and what drives you as a woman in business today?

I took over a florist retail business about 9 years ago now. I had been managing the shop previous to that and just loved the team, loved my job, the customers and just being all-round creative. I opened my studio after building up such a great wedding flower business, I knew my time had to be spent where my passion was.

I think my inspiration and drive comes from my Grandad and my Dad, my Grandad had always been so encouraging to people when talking about running a business and being your own boss, it’s something my Dad has always wanted to do but just never got round to it (perhaps bringing up a family got in the way!) But I have always looked up to both of these Men in my life and that is why I now run my own business.

I can be stubborn at times and when told something will be ‘too hard’ and ‘I probably should think about it’… well, I’ll just go ahead and do it anyway to prove a point. It is this, coupled with the fact Women, are quite incredible resilient characters, we ride out the hard times and come out the other side screaming a little but filled with new drive and energy.

I am driven by everyone and everything around me on a daily basis. I’m driven by how lucky I am to be creative every day and work in such beautiful surroundings, by the many Women who just amaze me all the time from my Mum to my colleagues, friends, family and fellow wedding industry friends.

Tell us a little about your most recent shoot with Venetia and what personal branding means to your business.

I absolutely loved my recent shoot with Ve. Although she may tell you different as she knows I’m not a fan of the camera, when it’s on me!! But it was so lovely to just feel like I was standing out a little more than usual. I’m not the most confident and I always question everything I do (it’s what makes me good at my job I guess!) but I think perhaps when I had the retail side of my business I hid behind its name and the team, we were always a team, it was never about me but now with the studio it is mainly me (although I have a fantastic team behind me) this time it’s more personal. My clients meet with me, talk with me, text me, email me, and it’s me who turns up to greet them on their wedding day armed with flowers and excitement, so it seemed only fitting that some of my branding / professional imagery and my website said something about me and who’s behind the studio.

Venetia Norrington Personal BrandingVenetia Norrington Personal Branding

What is your greatest achievement as a woman? (Can be in your business, your personal life, something massive, something silly, something you feel proud of)

It has to be my business. I worked hard to get my business where it is today, went through a lot of hard times, tears, completely lost my confidence but then there have been some amazing times, full of excitement and I’ve been a part of some fantastic things along the way. My business has been the only thing I can recall that has caused me so much emotion over the years but I wouldn’t be the Woman I am today in business without any of that.

I must say though completing a commando challenge was pretty good going… I haven’t tried it again!

Venetia Norrington Personal Branding

Name a woman that you admire and tell us why (can be anyone at any level)

I have a few as I wouldn’t be where I am without them, for instance my best friend, just because she’s amazing and always has my back. My wedding industry friends because they are such incredibly talented Women and they amaze me daily.

But without a doubt my Mum… because no matter what is thrown at her at any time of the day, she always manages to hold her stuff together.

Venetia Norrington Personal Branding

And finally, If you were organising a parade in celebration of IWD, which Woman or Women would you create a statue of for pride of place on the float?

I would put all of my wedding industry girlfriends, individually they are super talented and wonderfully creative, but together as a group of Women…incredibly powerful, and that should be a message to all Women in business.

Thank you Gemma!

Spotlight: Women in Business | Kate Webb

Mar 23 2018 Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago we wrote a little blog entry on marvellous Women to coincide with International Women’s Day. We’ve felt inspired to show off some amazing Women in our lives that we have been lucky enough to hang out with and photograph, and what better time than now, as we launch our Women’s Portraiture Collections to the world!

In the first of our Spotlight series we ask Kate Webb from Responsible Safari Company some burning questions…

About Kate

Tell us who you are, the name of your business and a little about what you do…

Hello! My name is Kate Webb and I am Managing Director of Responsible Safari Company  a company which I co-run with my husband, Dom.

The Responsible Safari Company (RSC) is a Social Enterprise Tour Operator based in Blantyre, Malawi specialising in Sustainable, Educational, Philanthropic & Experiential Group Travel to the country. Operating since 2008, RSC provides specialised planning and logistical support for School Expeditions, University Field Trips, Charity & Adventure Challenges, Donor and CSR Groups as well as Independent Travellers. Specialising in tailored Educational Workshops & Challenge Events, RSC work in partnership with inspiring Community Initiatives offering immersive learning opportunities for students & businesses to gain an insight into key global challenges facing rural communities in Africa. We are committed to creating sustainable growth through social enterprise, reducing the dependence on the aid industry and driving tourism generated income to rural communities.

What inspired you to start your business, and what drives you as a woman in business today?

We ran away form London when we were 22 as we didn’t feel a sense of belonging or achieving something fulfilling. So we took the opportunity and travelled around Africa for a few years, absolutely loved every moment and knew we had found something truly wonderful where we felt not only at home but somewhere we could make a difference.

We took teaching jobs to keep us financially secure, it was important for me to know i had job security whilst building the business so i could make sure we were financially sound and safe.  We made plans around camp fires of our dream business and RSC was born!

Inspiration comes from so many places but in this particular time I would say seeing the gumption and determination of the Women I spent so much time with in Malawi gave me so much of what I needed to drive forward. They filled me with strength and made me feel like I could do anything. As did my husband, Dom. We pushed each-other along, combining skills and interests, whilst behind it all had such passion for creating a full time gig we both loved! These things and my family still drive me in the same way today.

Tell us a little about your most recent shoot with Venetia and what personal branding means to your business.

Venetia had heard about the work we do in Malawi and sent the best email I think I’ve ever received telling me how totally in love with the work we do she was and how she’d love to support us on the next trip we did! When we spoke on the phone it further cemented my initial feeling that she was my kind of person, passionate and honest with fierce determination to do good things. It was a bit later on we realised we needed some professional imagery for the company and there was only one option!

I’m not desperately keen on having my photo taken, nor my husband, but we felt so comfortable with Venetia it was truly a pleasure! I cooked her lunch and we spent the day hanging out, talking and laughing and taking photos in-between.

What is your greatest achievement as a woman? (Can be in your business, your personal life, something massive, something silly, something you feel proud of)

Trying to learn how to balance having my own business and being a full time person in my children’s life, Sam who is 3 and Emmie who is 1, especially in this crazy wonderful time before they go off to school. I feel like I am just about getting there. It’s more something I see to be my biggest achievement in the future as it is one I will work constantly on. This in itself gives me a tremendous sense of achievement and if I can try and find that holy grail of balancing both my professional life and my personal life then all is well in my world.

Name a woman that you admire and tell us why (can be anyone at any level)

So many. But one that springs instantly in to my mind is a brilliant woman who lives in Exeter, her name is Katy Toms, and she is coming with us on our next expedition. Katy is a Senior Civil Engineer, included in the ‘Top 50 Women in Engineering for 2017’, Katy is incredibly humble, committed to her career and knows how to push boundaries. She does a huge amount of mentoring and has the natural ability to get the very best from people. I think she has sprung to mind for this as I see her getting it spot on in terms of female empowerment, she just gets on with it, doesn’t come across hard nosed but is furiously focused, gets things done, makes good decisions and is always there to help…in-fact a bit like Venetia!

This years theme for IWD is #pressforprogress – Are you happy to share a point in your life where you feel you have had to stand up for gender parity / work hard against / press for progress etc.

I think for me as a Woman in this business and also adding in the cultural differences from the UK to Africa i have absolutely felt like my worth is far less than my husband’s, even though we are in the same role and I have more ‘educational bits of paper’ than him! It has been very difficult to prove my worth and ability and earn the respect I deserve. For me also, I am just as proud being a good Mother as a good business person, I think it’s hugely important to recognise this.

And finally, If you were organising a parade in celebration of IWD, which Woman or Women would you create a statue of for pride of place on the float?

I would put Venetia, myself, and my family (Dom, Sam & Emmie) on it! I’m all for gender equality 🙂 We would dance in beautiful bright outfits all the way together.
