I don’t like my photograph taken, its official. Its not that I’m scared of looking ‘into the lens’, it’s not that I’m overly bothered about my ‘lumps and bumps’, its certainly not that I don’t trust the person on the other end of the camera, I just feel really awkward. I’m paranoid everyone is looking at me, that I won’t smile right, that I’ll forget to hold my tummy in or that my double-chin may make an unwanted appearance. I forget all the ‘tips and techniques’ I tell my bride and groom’s to look their best and I turn into a bumbling wreck!
Not only do I also presume that the majority of the population feels the same as me but I have complete sympathy with wedding couples when they say that they are ‘camera-shy’ and do everything I can to make them feel as comfortable as possible.
However, last month I discovered that certainly wasn’t the case with everyone and I didn’t need to do any of these things when I photographed Emma & Chris’s pre-wedding shoot in Bristol.
When they booked me to photograph their wedding, we spent more time chatting about life, love and the fabulous plans they had for their wedding day, than actually wedding photography itself. So the subject of ‘are you wannabe models’ didn’t come up!
We met at the fabulous Goldbrick House in Bristol to catch up on all their wedding news before heading off to take some photographs.
I’m used to easing people in gently, finding ‘locations’ where they are most comfortable and giving lots of encouragement to ‘bring them out of their shells’. But nope, not with these guys. They took to it like ‘ducks to water’. They were so into each other, I think they actually forgot I was there at all and it enabled me to get some fabulous images that are just….them.
We found some fabulous light and some gorgeous spring trees…
As I say….they just ‘did’ and I just photographed….!
I love these two images and Emma’s stand….she is so good at this even the pigeon couldn’t believe it!
The frame of the trees and Chris’s un-prompted kiss makes this a winner for me.
Love the light…..
This is the photograph they chose for their web-site login card….it’s one of their fav’s.
I was AMAZED by Emma. If anyone has worked with professional models before you’ll know the way they ‘move’ just a tiny bit after each click of the shutter. Emma was doing just that and it enabled us to get such a variety of images….so many to choose from!
Chris was taller than me so I had to shoot this on my longest lens and stand ‘uphill’ from him. That will teach me for leaving my stepladder in the car!!
Check out their ‘model-moves’….love it, love it, love it!
I’m well known for ‘going that extra mile’ for the right shot and have had clients (or myself!) in all manner of places, positions and ‘balances’ and this time it was my turn to climb over the fence and balance on the edge of the lake!
I think it was worth it!
Had to get the beautiful daffodils in…
And on the way back to the car I had my ‘just one more’ moment….
And of course they ‘worked it’ well….
Oh…well….actually, I lied. I had 2 ‘just one more’ moments when I saw the light here!
And I can’t choose between them so you get both!
Emma & Chris – you were amazing to photograph. But then again you know that as I kept telling you and my assistant ALL the way home! I can’t wait to share your wedding photographs with everyone too.
